A day in the life of a children’s book illustrator (a.k.a me!)

Hey everyone! I can’t believe we’ve reached June already (although it feels as though the weather has hopped in a time machine and travelled back to March sometimes.) But it doesn’t matter what the weather’s doing, I’m always beavering away on my creations for my lovely clients from all over the world.
This month, I wanted to give you a peep through a window into my world. I always daydreamed about being an illustrator where no two days are the same and I feel so lucky that this dream is now actually my reality. Whilst I would love to tell you that I’m super organised and follow a routine each day, that’s just not true! I love living and working in a state of slight creative chaos so each day is different, but I’ll give you a flavour of what my day is like (with a large amount of artistic license employed!)
Before work
I wake up or am woken up by slobbery kisses (from my gorgeous pup, Ollie, obviously!) After I’ve woken up fully from dreamland, I have breakfast and wave goodbye to my lovely husband, Scott, as he heads to work. Then Ollie and I embark on our first adventure of the day together.

During work
After our walk, I take a second to catch my breath because Ollie has a lot of energy. When I’m ready, I head upstairs and get to work on my designs. I use mixed media to create my designs to change things up a bit and can often be found experimenting with household materials like coffee that definitely can’t be found in traditional art sets! I usually have a couple of amazing chats with my clients too.
If I’m looking for inspiration, I grab Ollie’s lead, and we go on another walk in nature together. I look for materials that inspire me with look or texture and keep my eye out for any cute creatures or beautiful plants that could play the starring role in my designs.
I love a change of scene so in the afternoon, I move my things downstairs. If the weather isn’t being too typically British, I can even sit in my garden and draw. I LOVE days when I can do this because my work and inspiration are all in one place.

After work
After I’m finished for the day, I take Ollie for another walk. When I’m feeling motivated enough, I might come home and do a relaxing yoga routine or a funky dance workout. But I might just chill on the sofa and watch some of my favourite telly until Scott comes home from work.
Sometimes I pick up my brushes too and create watercolours for fun. It can be really good to step away from the technology I use for work and reconnect with the way I fell in love with art (when Ollie will let me!)

So there you have it! A day in the life of Eleanor Loseby!
